Since 1988, Fraunhofer FOKUS has been shaping digital change and its effects on society, the economy and technology. We support commercial enterprises and public administration in digitization and offer the full range of research services: from requirements analysis, consulting, feasibility studies and technology development to prototypes and pilot projects. We apply secure and resilient data and communication technologies at the highest scientific level.

We understand digitalization and networking from a technical, economic, and social perspective. This includes the holistic interaction of systems, things, organizations, processes, and people in different combinations and to varying degrees – from the purely technical dimension to the socio-technical system. Our technology development incorporates the resulting dependencies, influences, and interactions of digital networking right from the start. In this way, we ensure that our solutions provide our customers with (economic or organizational) added value tailored to their specific requirements.

Our decades of technical expertise and domain knowledge have provided us with an overview of the path of technological development and targeted access to the right means for the right purpose. We are also actively involved in standardization committees to promote the interoperability of new technologies and accelerate their transfer to the market. With this holistic application expertise in making state-of-the-art technologies for distributed systems usable at the highest scientific level, FOKUS has a unique position among the renowned Fraunhofer Institutes.

We bring secure and resilient data and communication technologies into application at the highest scientific level and with excellently trained researchers. Science-based solutions for the needs of the economy and administration, conceived with creative ideas and technologically implemented by the employees of Fraunhofer FOKUS, are the core of our success.  

We work application-oriented, i.e., closely with our customers and partners from SMEs and large-scale industry, administration, politics, and research and address their practical needs. We see our work as provider- and technology-independent transfer, i.e., we apply scientific methods to technical solutions.

We integrate energy efficiency, resource conservation, and social responsibility into our work in the long term: Through strategic research projects with a positive impact on the environment and society, as well as measures for everyday work at FOKUS, we continuously contribute to climate protection and sustainability.

The most crucial success factors are our employees and a culture of cooperation and belonging. Diversity awareness is, therefore, firmly anchored as a cross-cutting issue in our daily interactions and communication. To increase the proportion of women especially in management positions and create equal career opportunities for all, we support and offer various formats – from Girls' Day and the FOKUS student network to the Female Leadership Community.
