The Software-based Networks business units research team is presenting the further development of its Open5GCore core network in the Open6GHub project. The goal is an organic network that dynamically adapts its network infrastructure depending on the application. Open6GHub is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Media

The Future Applications and Media business unit team is working on an anti-collision system for drones at airports with mixed air traffic within the BMBF project 6G NeXt. The drones' journeys are monitored in real-time and collision risks are predicted using algorithms. In the event of danger, evasive maneuvers are calculated centrally. The transmission and analysis of the data streams as well as the control of the drones are planned via a 6G network.

Another 6G application in the project is holography for video conferencing. This will be enabled by end-to-end transmission of real-time 3D holographic videos with photorealistic content and realistic 3D depths on a 6G network. This application requires very high bandwidth for up- and downstreaming of the high bitrate holographic 3D content, as well as extremely low latency to enable interactive and immersive real-time communication.

Mobility

Sensors in smartphones, road infrastructure and vehicles can be connected via mobile networks. With this, people in cars, on bikes and eScooters are networked. The team of the Smart Mobility business unit is using this networking for low-latency safety applications, while integrating it into future 6G mobile networks. This will allow real-time warnings to be sent to road users to prevent a collision - cooperatively across different radio networks and technologies.

6G also improves teleoperated driving and thus accelerates the introduction of highly automated driving: The new high-frequency ranges of 6G optimize cooperative sensing and lead to more precise positioning of vehicles and people. The data for this is analyzed locally using edge computing. For the planning and implementation of these applications, the project partners from various industrial sectors rely on the simulation environment Eclipse MOSAIC from Fraunhofer FOKUS.
