ALADIN project demonstrates campus network out of the box

The challenges in the fight against forest fires are diverse and demanding: There is often no or only poor cellular reception in the forest, the areas are difficult to access and may even be contaminated with munitions. To better address these challenges, the ALADIN (Advanced Low Altitude and Data Information System) project used a temporary, reliable 5G communications network – “out of the box”. This enables precise control of firefighting vehicles, real-time transmission of video and data streams to mission control, and communication between responders.

Crowdsourcing app provides data for mobility and mapping services

In the Shuttles&Co project, the business unit Smart Mobility at Fraunhofer FOKUS has developed a smartphone app that can be used to map the road situation in passing and without special sensors. The data enables an independent digital road map for the city administration, which can serve e.g. developer teams as a basis for mobility services. The app was tested in cooperation with BT Berlin Transport GmbH within 12 months in 2021 and 2022 during regular public transport bus trips at different locations in Berlin.

Safely through the city on foot, by bike or e-scooter

Digital connectivity of all road users is necessary for safe and cooperative road traffic. So far, however, only cars can be reliably localised and warned accordingly thanks to their various sensors. Fraunhofer FOKUS is closing this gap with LaaS, “Location-as-a-Service”. It makes conventional GPS localisation more precise with the help of sensors in the smartphone and plausibility checks of GPS data from people in the vicinity. The user data is anonymised for data protection purposes. LaaS can be intuitively integrated by developers into various apps, e.g. for collision warnings.

Impressions of the field trial in Berlin in April 2023

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies open unprecedented information possibilities, especially in the field of mobility. To enable such groundbreaking development, high-bandwidth connectivity and ultra-low latency are essential, especially during a ride on public transportation. In this use case, the partners of the 5G VICTORI project analyzed these possibilities and put them to the test in a field trial in Berlin, in April 2023.
