The goal of CampusOS is to build a modular ecosystem for open 5G campus networks based on open radio technologies and interoperable network components. This is intended to enable vendor independence and more competition as well as innovation in order to strengthen the digital sovereignty of companies in Germany.
Germany is a global pioneer in the operation of 5G campus networks, i.e., local and customized 5G mobile networks. This lead was achieved, among other things, by having its own campus network frequencies from the Federal Network Agency. The partners in the CampusOS project now want to extend this lead further by creating a digital ecosystem that ensures open radio technologies and interoperable network components. The ecosystem is to be realized in the form of a technology construction kit, which will be expanded to include a component catalog and proposals for different operator models. Thanks to network virtualization supplemented by artificial intelligence and machine learning, end devices as well as radio access network (RAN) and core network (CORE) functionalities can thus be combined dynamically and in line with demand to form a modular and secure 5G campus network.
