Trials 5G Playground

Fraunhofer FOKUS is actively participating in collaborative projects where best practices are created for R&D infrastructure integration, configuration and deployment as well as for the support of 5G trials projects. Some of these projects, including parts of the 5G Playground are listed here.

5Genesis

Logo 5Genesis

For 5Genesis, 5G Playground is offering the Berlin platform: Ultra dense areas covered by various network deployments, ranging from indoor nodes to nomadic outdoor clusters, coordinated via advanced backhauling technologies to showcase immersive service provisioning.

5G VINNI

Logo 5G-VINNI

The 5G Playground facility in 5G VINNI is located around Fraunhofer FOKUS location in central Berlin and has an extended number of remote/edge connectivity islands, such as the SES’s satellite interconnected facility located in Betzdorf, Luxembourg as well as the support for interconnection with a nomadic small size 5G edge network which is used for demonstrations at large scale events and conferences.

SATis5

Logo SATis5

Through SATis5, the 5G Playground is extended to cover the most significant use cases of satellite-terrestrial convergence in 5G. Through the ubiquity and the security of the satellite connectivity, the 5G Playground testbed is able also to gain its location independence and mobility of the edge nodes, considered essential for the most vertical sectors.

5G Enhance

Logo 5G-Enhance

5G Enhanced Mobile Broadband Access Networks in Crowded Environments (5G-Enhance) is a Horizon 2020 joint project composed of EU research team (VTT, FHG, UOULU and Accelleran) and Japan research team (TUAT, NICT, UEC, CATV, JCTA and RWJ). 5G-Enhance intends to develop and execute large scale trial activities on actual testbed in EU and Japan where the 5G playground components are used as part of the micro-operator deployments.

5G!Pagoda

 Logo 5G!Pagoda

5G!Pagoda represents the next evolution step in softwarized networks as supported by NFV, SDN and aimed at by the 5G network evolution. The top objectives of 5G!Pagoda are Transport and Risk Management for critical issues such as Climate Action and Secure Societies

  • the development of a scalable 5G slicing architecture towards supporting specialized network slices composed on multi-vendor network functions, through the development of
  • scalable network slice management and orchestration framework for distributed, edge dominated network infrastructures, and convergent software functionality for
  • lightweight control plane and data plane programmability and their integration, customization, composition and run-time management towards different markets in Europe and Japan.

5G Playground is the central European testbed location for the 5G!Pagoda multi-slice deployments.

Bercom

Logo BERCOM

Fraunhofer FOKUS offers with its toolkits Open5GMTC and Open5Gcore within the 5G Playground an experimental platform for realizing the BERCOM demonstration scenarios for factory shop floor connectivity. Such local communication capabilities are essential for safety-critical applications, to ensure secure and efficient communication even under constrained conditions.

FUDGE-5G

Logo FUDGE-5G

The main objective of FUDGE-5G is to devise, assess and demonstrate a conceptually novel and forward-looking cloud-native, unified and secured service-based 5G architecture, solutions and systems for private networks. The architecture will allow for extensive interoperability and customization for industry verticals among wired and wireless access infrastructure, featuring “all-Ethernet” 5GLAN (Local Area Network), 5G-TSN (Time- Sensitive Networking), and 5G-Multicast.

Local Trials in Berlin

The infrastructure in Berlin is open for local trials. Small or medium size companies can enter into the 5G Playground as technology providers, as use case owners or as both.

For the use case owners, 5G Playground offers the possibility to:

  • To integrate the specific use case devices and applications into a reference 5G environment
  • Execute friendly trials and pilots on an already established infrastructure
  • To validate the use case from a technology perspective
  • To make demonstrations towards the decision factors using a comprehensive environment.

For the technology providers, 5G Playground offers the possibility to:

  • Integrate the products into an already running environment, where interoperability tests and performance evaluations can be executed from the first day
  • Visibility and being part of an independent end-to-end environment including the most innovative technologies
  • Testing of the software components within a system including third party hardware and external components.

Remote Trials

Fraunhofer FOKUS is offering technology and support for trials at the use case premises, covering all the steps necessary to execute a trial at the use case location while using the 5G Playground central node in Berlin. This includes:

  • The configuration of the local network at the use case premises including devices, base stations and the portable 5G edge
  • Interworking of the portable 5G edge with the 5G Playground in Berlin including the deployment of end-to-end slices across the edge and the central location
  • Remote OAM of the portable 5G edge
  • Data acquisition, automatic processing and presentation to the use case owners
