DTVP/DTG Plugfest and HbbTV Testing Event

The Deutsche TV-Plattform will continue its Plugfest series. The focus will be on tests for HbbTV, streaming, immersive audio and DVB-I, as well as UHD-HDR (HDMI) tests. Following the Plugfest, the HbbTV Testing Event will take place from June 28 to 30, offering HbbTV implementers the opportunity to conduct tests on their devices and address any issues with the implementation.

Fraunhofer FOKUS' business unit Future Applications and Media participated at the Mile High Video workshop. Expert Daniel Silhavy provided a live presentation (followed by a Q&A session) – discussing the latest developments in improving video streaming with machine learning methods. 

Abstract

Nowadays, video streaming content is responsible for immense amounts of data on the Internet. In order to support the Internet's limited transmission capacities, videos are compressed during encoding. However, this often results in a loss of quality – which poses particular challenges for live streaming where there are limited possibilities for efficient caching. 

This is where “FAMIUM Deep Encode” comes in – it analyzes the video and collects playback metrics for each individual scene to predict and automatically adjust upcoming encoding settings. Our solution utilizes artificial intelligence methods to enable per-title encoding for Video on Demand and live streaming. In comparison to traditional video encoding methods, this approach results in a reduction of up to 30 percent in average storage and transfer volumes. This reduction leads to significant cost savings in the long-run, and improves the overall quality of experience for the end user.

FAME @ HbbTV Symposium Rome 2017

At the 6th HbbTV Symposium in Rome, Miggi Zwicklbauer hold a talk on “How to create HbbTV Apps without Programming one Line of Code”. Furthermore, the HbbTV Awards 2017 nominated three apps developed within the EU-project MPAT as finalists in the category “Best use of HbbTV for broadcast enhancement”.  

Fraunhofer FOKUS and Red Tech, a division of Red Bull jointly presented the first step into the evolution of broadcast measurement. Fraunhofer FOKUS designed and developed the HbbTV based measurement framework and created a comprehensive TV research toolkit together with Red Bull. The solution is shortlisted for the prestigious HbbTV Awards in the category “Best technology innovation in an HbbTV product or service”.

The Fraunhofer FOKUS Ad-Insertion Tools demonstrate standards-based dynamic ad-insertion techniques for HbbTV 2.0 and Over-the-Top delivery (OTT) via MPEG DASH and HTML5.
The solution allows for hybrid playout of Ad cue messages to both, broadcast and broadband world and supports conversion of SCTE35 to HbbTV and MPEG DASH specific events for ad signaling, 
VAST and various ad types like display and video ads.
